The Ultimate 7-Day North Macedonia Itinerary
North Macedonia may be small, but it packs incredible diversity into its compact borders. This 7-day itinerary will take you through ancient capitals, pristine lakes, mountain adventures, and cultural treasures that make this Balkan gem unforgettable.
Day 1-2: Skopje - The Capital Experience
Start your journey in Skopje, North Macedonia's vibrant capital. Spend your first day exploring the Old Bazaar, one of the largest and most well-preserved marketplaces in the Balkans. Visit the Stone Bridge, Macedonia Square, and the impressive Kale Fortress overlooking the city.
On day two, take a short trip to Matka Canyon, just 15 minutes from the city center. Enjoy boat rides, cave exploration, and hiking trails. Return to Skopje for dinner at a traditional restaurant in the Old Bazaar.
Day 3: Skopje to Ohrid via Bitola
Drive south to Bitola, known as the "City of Consuls." Explore the elegant Shirok Sokak pedestrian street and visit the ancient ruins of Heraclea Lyncestis. Continue to Ohrid in the evening, where you'll spend the next three nights.
Day 4-5: Ohrid - The Pearl of the Balkans
Dedicate two full days to exploring Ohrid and its surroundings. Visit the Church of St. John at Kaneo, the Ancient Theatre, and take a boat trip on Lake Ohrid. Don't miss the monastery of St. Naum, located on the Albanian border, famous for its peacocks and natural springs.
Spend time walking along the lake promenade, swimming in the crystal-clear waters, and enjoying fresh trout at lakeside restaurants. The sunset views from the fortress are absolutely spectacular.
Day 6: Mavrovo National Park
Take a day trip to Mavrovo National Park, Macedonia's largest national park. Enjoy hiking trails, visit traditional villages, and if you're visiting in winter, experience some of the best skiing in the Balkans. The park offers stunning mountain scenery and diverse wildlife.
Day 7: Return to Skopje via Tetovo
On your final day, drive back to Skopje via Tetovo. Stop to visit the colorful Painted Mosque (Šarena Džamija), one of the most beautiful Ottoman monuments in the country. Arrive in Skopje with time for last-minute shopping and a farewell dinner.
Essential Travel Tips
Best Time to Visit: May through September offers the best weather, with July and August being warmest but most crowded. Spring and early fall provide pleasant temperatures and fewer tourists.
Transportation: Renting a car provides the most flexibility, but buses connect major cities. Domestic flights are not necessary given the country's small size.
Budget: North Macedonia is very affordable. Expect to spend €30-50 per day for mid-range accommodation, meals, and activities.
